Built before 1275 on a huge rock overlooking the Firth of Lorn, Dunstaffnage was the mighty stronghold of the MacDougalls.

The castle, with its huge curtain wall, was captured by Robert the Bruce in 1309 and remained in royal possession for some years. Dunstaffnage became the temporary prison of Flora MacDonald in 1746.

Highlights:

The location – stand on the battlements, overlooking the Firth of Lorn, and see just why the MacDougall chief built his castle where he did.
The formidable curtain wall – amongst the oldest standing castle remains in Scotland.
The ‘new house’ of 1725 in the courtyard – perhaps where Flora MacDonald was held prisoner.
Dunstaffnage Chapel – tucked away amongst the trees, an extraordinary legacy from the 13th century.
